Scientists investigating a large crater in a field in northern Latvia, believed to have been caused by a meteorite, now suspect it was a hoax.
The crater appears to have been dug by shovels, a doctoral student in geology told reporters, according to LETA, the nation’s official news agency.

Scientists say a crater in Latvia initially thought to have been caused by a meteorite was really a hoax.
A video made to look like amateur footage showed something burning in a crater and was viewed by many thousands on YouTube, with much speculation as to whether the “meteorite” was real.
According to LETA, the national news service of Latvia, local firm Tele2 owned up to inventing the entire meteor scam in an effort to put Latvia on the map.
